Frequently asked question

1. What is community chaplaincy and why is it important?
We are living in a broken society with innumerable people suffering from trauma caused by every day and more complicated traumatic experiences. Community Chaplains provide on-hand support to deal with such traumatic incidents and are used to link people to more professional services, if required.
2. What are the key principles of building a successful community chaplaincy program?
To have a good understanding of the challenges of your community and to have access to such a community. You need to be trustworthy, a good listener and show empathy under all circumstances. Chaplains have a passion for the wellbeing of others and will walk the extra mile to bring relief, render support and provide resources and support.
3. How can I effectively communicate with and serve diverse community members as a chaplain?
Through undergoing Chaplaincy training such as this, and to learn how to interact with diverse communities.
4. What are some common challenges faced by community chaplains, and how can they be addressed?
There are endless challenges, but to name a few, will include the following: Not knowing how to effectively operate under difficult circumstances, how to render an effective chaplaincy service, how to build good relationships and an effective network of service providers. This can be addressed through proper training, skills development and continuous building of your chaplaincy service within your community.
5. How can I build strong partnerships with local organizations and service providers to support my community chaplaincy work?
Through being present, visible, and available. This is the foundation of any chaplaincy service, building relationships and just always being available. You can also go and visit them and present your services to them.
6. What resources and support are available for individuals interested in starting a community chaplaincy program?
The best way to generate resources and support is once again through building partnerships with interested and like-minded companies, organizations, and groups within your community. You will need to show them the value you offer and the benefits your service may provide. It is a long-term project which may start off slow, small and without much support, but through faithfully being available and serving in a small capacity, you will eventually be seen as a valuable member of your community. Visit your local businesses and show them your willingness to make a difference within your community.
7. How can I assess the needs of my community and tailor my chaplaincy services to meet those needs?
Speak to the existing service providers such as the emergency service, fire department, law enforcement and security services and find out what they consider to be void in the well-being of the community. Visit hospitals, schools and businesses and see how they feel about a chaplaincy service and where you can bring added value as chaplain. Watch the news, read newspapers and you will soon see where you can fit in as a chaplain. Even Churches and funeral parlours could be a useful place to go visit.
8. What strategies can I use to engage and mobilize community members to participate in chaplaincy programs and initiatives?
Host introductory events, displays at shopping malls and sessions at schools, open day markets, community gatherings and such events where you introduce yourself, have some marketing material available and invite the community to become involved. You may even offer this kind of training to them and get them equipped as chaplains to join your efforts.
9. How can I ensure that my chaplaincy work is sustainable in the long term?
This is the most challenging part of offering a chaplaincy service to your community as most people you will be dealing with will be under difficult circumstances and without any fees payable. Community Chaplains are usually volunteers offering a free service based upon their passion to assist others in their time of need. The best way to address this is to register your chaplaincy services as a non-profit organization and then enable yourself to receive donations. You may then find sponsors and donors or host fund raising events.
10. What should I do if I encounter resistance or pushback from community members or organizations in implementing a chaplaincy program?
Firstly, you need to be realistic and know that not everyone will be positive and share in your enthusiasm to render such a chaplaincy service. This should, however, not prevent you from going ahead with such a noble and much needed service. The fact that the service is absolutely required should always be your motivation and reason for working around any obstacles and opposition. If possible, meet with those in opposition and give them as much information as required to address their fears, or their doubts about the relevancy of your service.
